Gut Healing Nutrients in a Crockpot

My staple lunch is a bowl of bone broth, my Super Kale Salad and Vitamin C Green Smoothie. My body just feels so nourished after I consume it! In a perfect world (you know, the one where waffle fries have the same nutritional content as kale) my kiddos would just drink a cup of bone broth every day without a fuss. But now, I am using this broth personally and in soups for my family. Also, my dogs love the leftover bones…the veggies, not so much!

I’ve been reading a lot lately about the importance of gut healthy. An unhealthy gut can lead to a number of problems; one of the most significant being a poor immune system. Bone broth is one way (along with cutting sugar, gluten and dairy) to heal your gut. It is also super easy to make!  Oh, and if you’re in need of another gut-healthy recipe, check out my Two Ingrediant Crockpot Yogurt and get your daily dose of probiotics on the cheap!

“Excuse me, Mr. Butcher. Do you have some bones?”

I walked into Whole Foods knowing I was not the first person to ask the butcher this question. He pointed me to a freezer packed with bones for sale. If you have not found your own freezer full of bones, just as your grocery store butcher.  You also may be able to find some at your local farmers market. You may use either chicken or cow bones. We actually use bone both for different recipes.

How to Make Gut-Healing Bone Broth

What makes this bone broth recipe so easy if that there is very little peeling involved. This is because you are not actually eating the vegetables- you will strain them out when your broth is finished.

Step One: Turn your crockpot into HIGH

Step Two: Rough chop your vegetables and throw them into your crockpot with your bones and enough water to fill your crockpot.

Step Three: Cook on HIGH till it boils, then turn on LOW and let it simmer & stew for the next 12-24 hours. I always leave mine for 24 hours. The longer the yummier!

Step Four: Turn your crockpot off and let cool before transferring them to jars/bags for storage. I like to recycle my strawberry jelly or peanut butter or mayonnaise jars to store my broth and anything else I can put in a jar.  You can also let cool, then transfer to freezer bags if you’re not using it within 2-3 days. Be sure to leave a little room in your freezer bags/storage. Note: This broth will only last you 2-3 days in the refrigerator, so drink up! It will last up to 3 months in a freezer.

My favorite soup

When I make my cup or bowl of soup, I sauté’ two minced garlic cloves, pour in my broth and add a spoonful of the SUPERFOOD red palm oil (I like Nutivia’s brand, see link below) for flavor and extra goodness. You can try tossing in some leafy greens if you’re an over-achiever or try cracking an egg for an egg drop soup effect. I have not tried it personally, but I hear it’s good.
