Health made simple & on budget.
Do you struggle with keeping your family healthy?
Do you get discouraged when you go into the health section of a grocery store and see the astronomical prices of items you could never fit into your food budget?
Do you feel like you’re failing as a mom when your family is putting not-so-healthy things in & on their bodies?
I do.
Hi I’m Janice. Wife. Mom. Recovering Junk food-aholic. Welcome to Broccoli for Breakfast. I’m so glad you’re here!
As a mom of five kiddos & on a very tight budget, I am constantly trying to figure out what I can do to best care for my family and for myself! After all, processed food and junky household cleaners are cheap! But I know they will be costly in the end!
I designed this blog for my friends (and new friends like yourself) who would ask me for recipes or health tips. I wanted a place I could point them to find the answers they need easily and where they could engage in discussion. If you are looking for ways to help your family get healthy without breaking the bank, you’ve hit the JACKPOT!
Here are a few things you’ll find on Broccoli for Breakfast
- Healthy Recipes (with downloadable recipe sheets!)
- How to’s and resources for Meal Planning & Meal Prepping
- Exercise tips
- The latest on sleep research and other holistic treatment
- Essential Oil information
- Ways to identify what is worth the cost of health and what is not
At Broccoli for Breakfast, we adhere to a very strict Keepin’ It Real Policy
Every tip and technique are things that I have personally tried. Some things have worked, some things have failed. I’m going to share with you those failures too…all part of my keepin’ it real policy! I’ll also invite some guests to share with your their great ideas as well.
My Mama ainʼt Raise No Fool…but she did raise me on Junk Food
Being a daughter of a single mother, who worked 2 jobs many times, my mom’s main goal in life was just to make sure I ate! Therefore, most (if not all) of my meals growing up were junk food or fast food. My daily meals looked like this:
BREAKFAST: Burger King Crossanwhich
LUNCH: (afterschool) Taco Bell- they knew what I wanted when they say our car in the drive-thru!
DINNER: McDonalds
Naturally, when I went off to college, my diet didn’t change much. How could it? I didn’t know how to boil water!
Now as a kid, this fast food diet may seem pretty cool. As a teenager with a crazy fast metabolism, this is not a problem. Yet as an adult, our aging bodies (and our poor liver) has had enough! Something’s got to give!
Bad habits die hard.
Thankfully, I married a wonderful man named Aaron who loved to cook! But when we started having kids and I started staying home, I decided that I needed to actually learn to cook for my family!
Still, habits are hard to break and I still struggle with eating way too much fast food! This upbringing has caused me to really focus on nutrition for my family as I continue to break my bad habits and repair decades of damage and unhealthy eating patterns! That is why food and health are a bit of an obsession.
Currently, I’m a wife and mother of 5 (ages 2-13). What I am NOT is super rich with an expendable income to spend on protein shakes and whatnot. I have to figure out how to care for my family on a school teacher/bi-vocational pastor budget. My word for 2018 is HUSTLE. I’m hustling to keep my family healthy!
Health Takes Work
As a mom of five kids, my body is also not what it use to be. My free time is…well…almost non-existent. Of course, health takes work. So how do I even find the time to get healthy? Or strong? Or sleep?
On Broccoli for Breakfast, I am happy to share my journey and hopefully you will join me and get some motivation, information and inspiration on the way! Keep reading and make small changes every day, but some days might require BIG changes! Do what you can, knowing every step is progress to a healthier you! Soon you will see the impact of your choices!
And no I won’t always tell you to eat broccoli for breakfast. But seriously, try it! You’ll feel amazing!
