Face yoga? Thats not real.

Oh, but wait. It is though!

WE EXERCISE OUR OTHER MUSCLES

I guess it makes sense. You exercise the rest of your body. Why would you not exercise your facial muscles? If a skinny face eludes you, face yoga may be your answer. In fact, Face Yoga was the missing piece that I was looking for!

The first place that I gain weight is in my face. I also have my high Indian cheekbones, so you really notice when I put on an extra few pounds! However, even when I was losing weight or was skinny, I would get really frustrated by the fact that I could never lose these chubby cheeks! I could be 110 lbs and still have chubby cheeks!  What was I doing wrong? It’s not what I was doing wrong, but what I was NOT doing: Face Yoga.

WHAT IS FACE YOGA

Face yoga is a series of positions to strengthen your jaw, cheekbones and neck. It helps gives you a facelift by working your jawline and cheeks and more elasticity by stretching your muscles. It also helps get rid of that double chin!

FACE YOGA REPETITION

I recommend holding each position 5-10 times, for 5-10 seconds, based on your comfort level.

As with the beginning of any exercise, the beginning can be hard, uncomfortable and sometimes painful. We don’t want it to be painful, but you should feel some discomfort. Start out with 5 seconds each and work your way up to 10. Some positions you will be able to hold for 10 seconds and that is great! Do what you can for each one.

Studies have shown that doing these exercises once a day is sufficient and, if done daily, you may start seeing results after one week (as I did) and everyone should see full results within 4 months.  And for all of your overachievers out there, there has been no evidence that doing face yoga multiple times a day gives you any greater advantage than doing it once a day. So do it once and consider it done!

THINGS TO REMEMBER WHEN DOING FACE YOGA

  • As with all yoga, focus on breathing deeply in through your nose and out through your mouth. The breathing is just as (If not more) important than the position.
  • Sit comfortably and be comfortable. While the lotus position or cross leg position is recommended, some of our hips (like mine!) won’t let us sit comfortably in those positions. Make sure you are sitting up with your spine as straight as possible but in whatever position is comfortable for you.
  • Play some relaxing music. It doesn’t have to be spa music, just something you enjoy. My playlist is usually county and pop love songs, but some mornings I just like the silence! Said the homeschool mom of 5.

FIT FACE YOGA INTO YOUR LIFE

I do face yoga as part of my morning workout routine. It takes 10-15 minutes. But if you don’t have that routine, figure out how to fit it in your daily life. And remember that they don’t all have to be done in one sitting. You can do some of these positions as you go about your day:

  • During your commute to work
  • During your evening news watch/email check/ social media scrolling time
  • While watching your favorite Netflix show.
  • While walking your dog
  • While doing laundry or loading the dishwasher, or making dinner

All that to say, you probably don’t want to do these around people, as you will look a little crazy in some of these positions. Just keeping it real.

So have you tried face yoga yet? How was your experience? Comment below and let me know what you think or if you’ve tried anything to help get rid of your chubby baby cheeks. Because, seriously I’m taking notes!
